The rest of the world didn't matter!

Every once in awhile, you get one of those assignments that just feels right.  We had one of those Wednesday.  Joanna and I were ask to photograph a luncheon for the Riley Foundation.  We knew right away that this event was different.  It was not going to be the usual "here is your award, now shake my hand for the camera" type of gig. We watched the parents of Tyler Genneken come up and receive an award on his behalf.  He was supposed to have been a Riley Champion and walk across the stage with the other children.  He died November 5th from cancer.  He was 14.  The courage of these children with every kind of malady you can imagine was inspiring.  One young man had undergone 41 operations.  Another, spent 1 1/2 years in the hospital fighting a brain tumor.  My headache and stressed out life didn't matter anymore.  For 2 hours the 1100 people in that ballroom saw and felt what was important...... life.

Do we have to land?

I met Shawna and Jay a few months ago when they hired Joanna and I to shoot their wedding next March in Florida.  After talking with them for awhile it was very obvious that Jay's Piper Archer II is a BIG part of their relationship (He flew her to Florida to propose), so we HAD to use the plane for the engagement shoot!
We shot a few photos around Rick's Boatyard and then off we went from Eagle Creek Airport.  I fired the camera from a remote while I "hid" in the back seat.  Not an easy task for a  big guy that's 6'1"!  Sorry Joanna, but this "assignment" really gave me the bug to get my ticket and get airborne! Can I start saving for a plane? LOL!

I even included my ugly mug to just to prove I was really there! Trust me, most couples don't want me on this side of the camera. :)

Tired doesn't describe it!

Joanna and I are in St Thomas Virgin Islands and spent four days with Kurt and Alyssa, and I mean 4 VERY full days.  Wow, do we have thousands of photos to edit through!  We are beyond tired.  I actually think the stress and workload on a destination is at least two-fold.  But hey, we are in the US Virgin Islands! :)

Four days with a couple gives you lots of opportunity for photos, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and obviously the food.  My favorite was the 16 oz ribeye Thursday night!

It was almost 100 degrees right before the wedding started, and then the temp must have dropped 15 degrees when a fog/haze and a nice breeze rolled in.  I was really scared we would have a few folks pass out it was soooooo hot.  Turned out to be perfect, with a wonderful reception following with a local band called TNT.

I'll apologize to Kurt and Alyssa right now for the thousands  of photos we took! ;)

Wow, some serious blog neglect!

Joanna and I haven't really slowed down at all this summer.  Unfortunately, when we travel and stay so busy our blog ends up on life support, and I feel like it at times myself! :)  We've had some really fun moments.  The groomsmen "dropping their pants" and singing to the bride at the reception.... or the groom this past weekend hanging out of the limo yelling "I'm not a crook" at the top of his lungs!  Did anyone notice the full moon this past weekend?   Whether it's wiping away a tear, a detail of grandma's rosary, or a butterfly release, it's all important... all unique.  What would be the fun if they were all the same?  :)

The Perfect Photo

Joanna grabbed a shot this weekend that I just have to share.  It was shot at ISO 3200, 1/60 sec @ 400 mm, it's full of noise and isn't lit very well... and I just love it!  It doesn't involve a veil or pretty rings and it wasn't shot with the 85mm... and I still love it.  It'll never win an award, or even get a second look by most people. When I was editing Joanna's cards, I saw this photo and just kept coming back to it.  Who is this man?  Why was she compelled to take his photo?  I ask her and she had no idea who he was when she took the photo, she just noticed this nice elderly gentleman sitting in a chair.  Turns out, he's the grooms grandfather who is dying of Alzheimers.  All of the sudden this poorly lit, grainy, black and white photo is perfect in every way.

Sometimes a perfect photo goes way beyond the obvious....  I wouldn't change a thing!
